Cambridge Piano Company

The History of Cambridge Piano Company

Established in 1902 in New York City, the Cambridge Piano Company joined the long list of piano manufactures located in the Big Apple. Sometime over the next eight years, Cambridge was acquired by Ricca and Son’s, who continued to produce the line. Several years later, the Cambridge line was purchased by Jacob Doll but was subsequently sold to Winter and Company.

What set Cambridge pianos apart and gave them modest success in the early 1900’s was the smaller size of the upright pianos. Cambridge pianos could be found in 42”, 44”, 45” and 51” sizes. [1] This sizing was perfect for pianists and musicians living in smaller homes and apartments in and around New York City. [2] Unfortunately, Cambridge serial numbers stop around the time that WWII began, indicating that the line, like so many others, was discontinued. [3]

About Cambridge Piano Company Pianos

Cambridge pianos were popular during their time, as they were very affordable, and within most middle-class families budget. In addition to their affordability, their smaller size made them the choice piano for the ever-growing middle-class socioeconomic strata. For their price, Cambridge instruments were surprisingly pretty and possessed a pleasing tone. [4]

Restoring a Cambridge Piano Company Piano

There are not very many Cambridge pianos available on the market today, which alludes to the fact that they were never mass-produced. Many of the instruments that are still around are very well worn from years of play. One cannot give an estimated value of a restored Cambridge unless its condition is first evaluated because there simply aren’t enough instruments on the market to define a price point. The experts at Lindeblad can help you determine the value of your piano and our expert team can help you bring it back to life. Contact us today to discuss restoring your Cambridge piano!
