Where is the serial number on a Steinway?
On a grand, the serial number is stamped on the cast-iron plate near the tuning pins, usually visible when you lift the lid. On an upright, it’s on the plate just to the right of the tuning pins, or inside the top lid. It’s a 5–6 digit number.
How do I read a Steinway serial number to find the year?
Match your serial number to the chart above: find the closest number that does not exceed yours, and read across to the year. The serial acts like a birth certificate — it tells you the exact year, and often the factory, where your Steinway was built.
Does my Steinway’s age affect its value?
Yes. Steinways from the “Golden Age” (roughly 1900–1940) are especially prized for their old-growth wood and in-house cast plates, and a well-restored example can rival a new Steinway at a fraction of the price. Condition and model matter as much as age.
Should I restore an older Steinway?
Often, yes — a quality restoration can return a vintage Steinway to like-new sound and value. The right answer depends on the model, condition, and your goals. Send us your serial number and photos for a free, no-obligation assessment.
