Chickering Pianos

After learning the piano building trade through an apprenticeship, Jonas Chickering opened his own piano building business in 1823. His introduction of a one piece, cast-iron plate to support greater string tension of larger grand pianos was a major contribution to advanced piano technology. An improved version of this in a concert grand piano won top awards at the first International Exposition held in 1851 at the Crystal Palace, London. Chickering pianos built up until around WWII are considered second to none and some of the concert grands built between the late 1800’s to 1925 are highly regarded for their rich, powerful sounds, especially in the bass.
